Back in 2007, Shahade and Jean Hoffman co-founded the non-profit 9queens - a charitable organisation that provides chess instruction to those most in need of its benefits, especially girls and at-risk youths. All the author royalties from her book Play Like a Girl! Tactics by 9 Queens were directed at 9 Queens initiatives. Shahade has also worked with New York's Chess-In-The-Schools organisation. Her work with CIS included starting a Girls’ Academy and coaching the Championship team I.S. 318 and she currently leads Philadelphia 9 Queens Chess Academies classes in conjunction with After Schools Activities Partnerships.
Also a famous chess player, a philanthropist, an author and a kick-ass feminista, poker is just one chapter in the Jennifer Shahade story. She co-created naked chess, hula chess and roulette chess and continues to study and theorise on the nature of chess and its cultural effects.
Shahade won the first Open Face High Roller Championship in Prague, for her biggest cash prize to date. She also placed 62 out of over 2300 players in the 2013 10 Million Guaranteed Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open and 31st of more than 1000 players in the 2014 PCA Main Event. Shahade also coaches others in poker via the website runitonce.com.
"I always play women’s events if I can for two simple reasons: I like women who play poker - it brings out tough, smart women who I feel excited to talk to, regardless of skill level." (Vice)
